John Malanify of Longmont, Colorado died on December 6, 2018 after a brief illness.

John was born in Troy, NY to John and Frances (Keihm) Malanify. John met his wife Julie Rothenheber at Catholic Central High School, where he was senior class president in 1951.

He received a scholarship, attended, and graduated with a BS in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in 1955, and served 2 years in the U.S. Navy as a Deck Officer on the USS Estes and a Naval Lawyer at the Naval Training Center in Illinois.

John and Julie married in 1956 at St. Augustine’s Church in Troy. They had been married 62 years at the time of his death. After completing his military service as a Lieutenant jg, John received a graduate fellowship and returned to RPI and earned a PhD in Physics.

John received a post-doctorate assignment at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in 1964. He worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1966-1969. John returned to Los Alamos, and retired from the Lab in 1993.

In 2000, John and Julie moved to Longmont, Colorado and have been active members of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. John enjoyed gardening, world travel, and cheering for the Rockies and Broncos. He took several trips to Europe, including a river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest. He also toured Australia, Costa Rica, Ireland, Panama, and Canada.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and sister Mary Frances Gilson.

He is survived by his wife Julie of Longmont; son Jeff (Debbie) of Albuquerque; daughter Tina Bogott of Longmont; his brother Jim of Latham, NY; 3 grandchildren, Courtney Reimer (Mark) of Denver, Cameron of Livermore, CA, and Quinn of Boseman, MT; step-granddaughter Tracy Shelton of Kansas City, and step-grandson Jason McCoy of Albuquerque; five Great Grandchildren; and 2 nephews, John Gilson (Megan) of Charlotte, NC, and Joe Gilson of Clifton Park, NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at 10:00 am, with visitation 1 hour prior. Interment at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery will follow at 1:00 pm.
