Obituary for Barbara J. Moore

Barbara J. Moore
Barbara Jean (Wehunt) Moore passed away on April 23, 2018 at the TRU Hospice Care Center in Longmont, Colorado bringing to close a difficult five-year struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Barbara, and her twin brother Bill, were born on November 3, 1946 in Marietta, Georgia to Elbert (Bill) Wehunt and Lois (Winslett) Wehunt. Her father’s military career moved the family frequently during her early school years. By the time she completed high school, Barbara had attended nine schools in Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan, Texas and the Philippine Islands. Fond memories as a high school Junior and Senior at Clark AFB in the Philippines remained with her the longest. She graduated salutatorian of her high school class behind Bill as valedictorian. Barbara was Editor-in-Chief of her Senior class yearbook, member of the Student Council and four-year member of the National Honor Society. She lettered in basketball and softball. Barbara and Bill were selected by their classmates as “Best All Around” members of their Senior class.

Barbara was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Magna Cum Laude) in 1968 from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. She was awarded Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Kentucky in 1991.

On June 15, 1968, less than two weeks after graduating from Mercer, Barbara was united in marriage to Thomas (Tom aka Gene) Moore of Bellflower, Missouri. They had met during Barbara’s sophomore year at Palo Duro High School in Amarillo, Texas. When she finally accepted his proposal, in April 1967, they decided to delay marriage until she had graduated. Shortly prior to their engagement, Tom entered training for a position in Clear, Alaska with the intent of remaining there two to three years. Once engaged, plans changed quickly, and he relocated to Atlanta within eight months.

Barbara began her mathematics teaching career in the Fall of 1968 at Norcross High School in Norcross, Georgia. The birth of their first child in March 1972 interrupted that career and for the next eighteen years she put her heart into being a loving mother to her children, helpmate to her husband and friend to all that knew her. She did all those things exceedingly well. While their children were young Barbara served as a Girl Scout leader and even joined them for a couple years of karate lessons. She continued to enjoy playing softball and other sports. Her hobbies included quilting and gardening.

While all three of their children were born in Atlanta, Tom’s career, like that of her father, involved numerous relocations. Barbara resumed her teaching career in 1989 as a substitute teacher in Lexington, KY while earning her master’s degree. In later years she taught at Lexington Community College, Lexington, KY; Broome Community College, Binghamton, NY; and Evergreen School, Vestal, NY.

Tom accepted a career relocation to Longmont, CO in January 1995 and Barbara joined him in June 1996 once their youngest daughter had completed high school. They have been active members of Calvary Church in Longmont since that time.
Barbara completed her teaching career as Chair of the Math Department at Front Range Community College in Longmont, retiring in August 2009. She loved spending time with her four grandchildren.

While she loved teaching and tutoring older students in math, her first love was working with and teaching younger children in churches she attended. During her thirty-five plus years working with children she served in various roles including children’s Sunday School teacher, children’s Sunday School Director, Director of Vacation Bible School, director of numerous children’s plays and assisting at Upon The Rock Christian Camp. Barbara received her heart to serve from her mother and her love for people, especially children, from her father.

Barbara and Tom felt richly blessed by God during her final years, including the smooth sale of their Longmont home and transition into a condominium in preparation for the trials they knew were coming. The move made it possible for them to more fully live one day at a time. Only God can properly reward the many wonderful friends and family who played an ever-increasing role in Barbara’s care through their generous acts of love and kindness.

Barbara is survived by her husband Tom; three children, Doug (Elizabeth) Moore of Merritt Island, FL, Terri (Jim) Stenzel of Longmont, CO, Rebecca Moore (husband David Heim), of Fort Collins, CO; her brother Wayne Wehunt of Doraville, GA; her sister-in-law Sandra Wehunt of Mooresville, NC; four very loveable grandchildren and several aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her father, Elbert Wehunt, mother Lois Wehunt, twin brother William Wehunt and younger brother Michael Wehunt.

Memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday May 18, 2018 at the Calvary Church in Longmont. In lieu of flowers, contributions to TRU Community Hospice Care c/o Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Cremation entrusted to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory. Visit www.ahlbergfuneralchapel.com to share condolences.
