Obituary for Geneva R. Gill

Geneva R. Gill
Geneva R. Gill, 92, of Longmont, CO, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Sunday, October 15, 2017.

Geneva was born February 21, 1925, in rural Limestone County, Texas. She was a raised on a family farm and was proud of her rural and self-sufficient upbringing. She was the youngest of 7 children and learned hard work while growing up through the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, and World War II. She graduated from Groesbeck High School in Texas. She was always a tough soul, and survived a copperhead snakebite while picking vegetables as a 5-year-old. She was proud of her Texas heritage.

During her adult life, she graduated from business school in Dallas, Texas. Ultimately, she worked at the Houston Veteran’s Administration Hospital. She spoke of her time as a teletype operator at the VA with great pride. Indeed, it was while working at the VA, that she met the love of her life, Sam Gill. They married in 1954 and were the proud parents of Sammie, Mike, Patricia, and Paul. Together, they raised the family in Houston and Sugar Land, Texas.

She was creative and adventurous. She was always game for any family activity or sewing project. She was a world class seamstress. When Sam’s health began to fail, she cared for him at home for 13 years. Sam passed away in 2008. Just before she turned 90, Geneva moved to Colorado, where she enjoyed family, neighbors, friends, and a beautiful home in Longmont.

Geneva was a woman of strong faith. She enjoyed her Bible study. She liked animals and was especially fond of her dogs throughout her life. Her grand dog “Chloe darlin’” brought her much joy and many smiles, even at the end of her life. She enjoyed her new neighborhood and was often seen riding her three wheeled bicycle. She was quick to smile, slow to anger, and had a kind heart. As her own health began to fail, her ever present compassion for others always shone through. She always asked about others even if she wasn’t having a good day. She will be missed.

Her loving family includes: Children: Mike Gill and his wife Debbie, Patricia Gill, Paul Gill, and Sammie Jones. Grandchildren: Tiffany Smith (Bryan), David Gill, Rob Jones (Jaye), Casey Jones (Gail Parker) and greatgrandchildren: Audrey Smith, Stephen Jones, and Sean Jones. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and her dear friend Kari Schoenwald, whom she considered her “other kid.”

She was preceded in death by her husband Sam Gill, her parents Lillie and Bernice Rasco, brothers Virgil, Grady, Walter, and Hubert, and sisters Velma and Elaine.

Geneva and her family want to thank Halcyon Hospice and Home Instead for their compassionate care in her last days.

Visitation at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel on Tuesday October 17, from 5 to 7 PM. Burial will be in Texas, next to her husband Sam. Memorial contributions can be made to the Cobb Cemetery in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Visit www.ahlbergfuneralchapel.com to share condolences.
