Obituary for Harriet Lucinda Bissell (Felten)

Harriet Lucinda Bissell (Felten)
Harriet Lucinda (Felten) Bissell was born on October 27, 1936 in Wichita, KS. She was the second daughter of Harry Luther Felten, Jr. and Ruth Muir Felten; her sister was Janet Felten. She attended Piedmont High School in California and Annie Wright Seminary her junior year in Washington state, and graduated from Piedmont High in 1954. Harriet attended University of Colorado in Boulder where she earned the nickname “Sam Grunch from Silt”, which became a term of endearment for the rest of her life. At C.U. she met her husband Willard Earl Bissell. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta, graduating in 1958 with a degree in English Literature. She and Willard were married on March 18, 1960 in San Francisco, CA, and later moved to Broomfield to raise their three children, Eric Maxwell, Catherine Ann and Christina Elizabeth. When the family moved to the country near Erie, Harriet made some of her best memories, raising goats and chickens, gardening on 5 acres, leading multiple 4-H groups. She volunteered at The Humane Society, local and school libraries, Community Food Share, The Peaks Care Center and many other places. When Harriet and Willy moved to Longmont, she became active in numerous groups: Hoe and Hope, The Longmont Senior Center scrapbooking and papercrafts groups, and the Longmont Buddhist Temple.

Harriet’s focus in life was her family and keeping her kids happy and safe. She made sure no life event went uncelebrated, and she facilitated connections. Her motto was, “Show up and Pay Attention!”, and this is what she did. She was the Queen of Clippings, Christmas cards and personal mail. Harriet loved her dogs and was an avid reader and collector of books.

Harriet died peacefully at home on July 16th, 2017. She is survived by her husband, two daughters and her daughter-in-law. She will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name can be made to the Longmont Humane Society. A celebration of Harriet’s life will be held on August 12th from 12-4 PM at D Barn, 136 S. Main St. Longmont, CO. All who knew her are welcome. Visit www.ahlbergfuneralchapel.com to share condolences.
